Preserving a 1976 Classic
Some projects are about building something new. Others are about honouring what already exists.
When Gillian approached us about renovating her 1976 Airstream Excella, the goal wasn't to erase its history. It was to preserve its timeless character while creating a warm, functional interior ready for many more years of adventure. Working alongside our longtime friends at Stone Cold Renovations, we helped transform this iconic trailer into a space that blends classic design with handcrafted modern cabinetry.
The Customer
Gillian had a vision for her vintage Airstream, one that respected its heritage while making it comfortable for modern travel. Rather than replacing the trailer's unique personality, she wanted to enhance it with thoughtful craftsmanship, practical storage, and beautiful natural materials that would feel at home within the iconic aluminum shell.
To bring that vision to life, Stone Cold Renovations restored the trailer itself, while Overland Interiors designed and handcrafted the custom cabinetry, furniture, doors, and trim. Together, the result is a beautifully balanced renovation that feels both authentic and completely renewed.
The Challenge
Renovating a vintage Airstream is about far more than replacing old cabinets. Every decision must respect the trailer's original character while improving its functionality for modern living. The curved aluminum walls, unique window profiles, and compact footprint all require thoughtful planning and precise craftsmanship. Gillian wanted a space that felt bright, warm, and timeless, not a modern RV squeezed into a vintage shell. Achieving that balance meant preserving the charm that makes an Airstream so iconic while integrating custom cabinetry and furniture that looked as though it had always belonged there.
The Collaboration
Bringing Gillian's vision to life was a true collaboration. Our longtime friends at Stone Cold Renovations meticulously restored the Airstream itself, refinishing the walls and flooring, resealing every window, and completely rebuilding the bathroom.
Overland Interiors designed and crafted every custom piece of interior cabinetry, furniture, doors, and trim. Built from premium birch plywood and tailored specifically to the Excella's unique dimensions, each piece was designed to maximize storage, improve functionality, and complement the trailer's timeless design rather than compete with it.
The result is a beautifully restored Airstream that feels warm, inviting, and ready for many more years of adventure.
Favourite Features
A Kitchen Designed for Everyday Living
The kitchen is often the heart of any home, and this Airstream is no exception. Designed specifically for Gillian's style, the custom birch plywood cabinetry provides generous storage, durable butcher block work surfaces, and a layout that makes preparing meals simple and enjoyable. Every cabinet, drawer, and shelf was carefully planned to maximize functionality without overwhelming the compact interior, creating a space that feels open, inviting, and ready for everything from a morning coffee to dinner after a day of exploring.

Thoughtful Storage in Every Corner
Small spaces demand smart solutions, and every inch of this Excella was designed with purpose. Deep drawers, concealed storage, and a convenient pull-out refrigerator ensure that everyday essentials are always within easy reach while keeping the living space clean and uncluttered. By integrating storage naturally into the furniture, the interior remains functional without sacrificing the warm, residential feel that makes this renovation so inviting.

Honouring the Character of a Classic
One of the defining features of a vintage Airstream is its distinctive curved walls and panoramic windows. Rather than working against those iconic shapes, we embraced them. Custom-crafted birch window trim was designed to complement the trailer's original architecture, allowing natural light to fill the interior while highlighting the craftsmanship throughout the space. It's a subtle detail that helps preserve the timeless character that has made Airstreams beloved for generations.
A Bathroom Designed for Small Spaces
Even the smallest rooms deserve thoughtful design. The custom vanity provides practical storage while maintaining the clean, uncluttered aesthetic found throughout the trailer. Working alongside the beautifully renovated bathroom completed by Stone Cold Renovations, the handcrafted cabinetry adds warmth and functionality without compromising valuable floor space. It's another example of how careful planning can make compact living feel effortless.

Handcrafted for the Journey Ahead
Every piece of cabinetry in Gillian's Airstream was designed and built specifically for this trailer. From the wardrobe to the utility storage, each component was handcrafted from premium birch plywood to ensure lasting durability while complementing the trailer's timeless design. Rather than following trends, the focus was on creating furniture that feels as though it has always belonged here: beautifully crafted today and built to be enjoyed for decades to come.

Ready for the Road
When the final cabinet door was hung and the last piece of trim was installed, Gillian's Airstream was ready for its next chapter. Bright, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, it now offers all the comforts of home while preserving the unmistakable charm of a vintage trailer. It's the kind of space that invites you to slow down, settle in, and enjoy the journey - whether that's a weekend at the lake or an adventure across the country.
