A Sprinter Built Around the Outdoors
Living near the shores of Lake Huron, Patrick spends his free time exploring natural spaces and pursuing his passion for nature photography. His Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 144 AWD needed to support those adventures - not just as transportation, but as a comfortable basecamp, practical gear hauler and flexible living space.
When Patrick reached out to us just as winter was ending, he came with a request we had never received before.
He wanted a Murphy-style bed inside his van.
That request became the starting point for one of our most adaptable products yet: the Overland Interiors Loft Lift Bed.
The Customer
As a nature photographer and outdoor enthusiast, Patrick needed room for photography equipment, camping gear and the systems required for comfortable travel.
But he also wanted the interior to remain open and usable during the day.
A permanent platform bed would provide a comfortable place to sleep, but in a Sprinter 144 it would also occupy a significant amount of valuable floor space. Patrick wanted the comfort of a proper bed without giving up the flexibility to move around, organize gear or simply enjoy the van when he wasn’t sleeping.
The Challenge
Every inch matters inside a Sprinter 144.
Patrick needed a full sleeping platform that could move out of the way during the day while remaining strong and comfortable at night. It also needed to work with the cabinetry beneath it, where essential water, electrical and storage systems would live.
Instead of designing the bed and cabinetry separately, we approached them as one integrated system.
The Solution: The Loft Lift Bed
Patrick’s request inspired the Loft Lift Bed, our Murphy-style bed system designed for high-roof vans.
The ventilated platform is secured to mounting hardware integrated into the passenger-side upper cabinet. When lowered, it rests securely across the base cabinetry to create a strong sleeping platform. When raised, the rear of the van opens back up for everyday living and gear.
The system itself remains consistent, while the cabinetry beneath it can be adapted around the vehicle and the way each customer travels.

Three Favourite Features
Favourite Feature #1: A Bed That Gives the Space Back
The Loft Lift Bed gives Patrick a dedicated sleeping area without permanently sacrificing the rear of the van.
At night, the ventilated platform creates a stable and comfortable sleeping space. During the day, it lifts out of the way, giving Patrick room to organize photography equipment, change, relax or simply enjoy a more open interior.
It’s a simple idea that completely changes how a compact van can be used.
Favourite Feature #2: Storage That Works With the Bed
Patrick’s base cabinets were designed as part of the Loft Lift Bed system, not as an afterthought.
They support the sleeping platform while creating dedicated space for water, electrical components and everyday gear below. Keeping those functions together allows the rest of the Sprinter to remain remarkably open for a 144-inch van.
For another build, what lives inside those cabinets could change. Water capacity, battery systems, photography equipment or camp gear can all influence the configuration.
The Loft Lift Bed provides the framework. The storage beneath it is designed around the traveler.
Favourite Feature #3: One Cabinet, Several Jobs
Patrick selected a tall Bodega fridge, giving us another opportunity to make the most of limited space.
Instead of dedicating the entire cabinet to refrigeration, we incorporated discreet portable toilet storage below the fridge and a coffee bar with additional storage above it.
The result is one compact cabinet that handles refrigeration, everyday storage and Patrick’s morning coffee routine without taking up valuable kitchen-counter space.
